At one minute past six on the evening of 24 April 2007, a supercell that had formed in the Mexican mountains west of Piedras Negras crossed the Rio Grande and struck Rosita Valley. Outflow winds estimated between eighty and a hundred miles an hour partially lifted roofs first. Golf ball hail followed. Then the tornado arrived.
The survey team put the touchdown a quarter mile southwest of Rosita Valley Elementary School. It destroyed the outer walls of a four-room home, damaged three more and destroyed a fourth, then tore a mobile home off its frame. Seven people died and damage reached eighty million dollars. It remains one of the strongest tornadoes recorded near this stretch of the river.
